August Birthstone

The birthstones for August are peridot and spinel.

Peridot is abundant in the Earth's mantle. It is captured by the lava that has blown out from deep into the ground and appears on the surface. It is also known as a stone that can be found in meteorites.

The name spinel comes from the Latin word "Spina" meaning thorn. This is because the octahedron of the perfect crystal was like a spine.
